Why do atheists say that you don't need religion to have a society with values when it's obviously not true?

This is a good example of a "straw man" argument, especially since you have no evidence other than your subjective opinion to support either of your positions. The use of "traditional" is a nice touch as it leads to read to assume that somehow people have mystically become "worse" in today's culture, even though history does not support this.
