"Freedom Writers" movie - What message did you get from watching this?

Watched this DVD with my son; he was required to watch it for his Literacy class. Appears to be based on a true story; Inner city teens raised on drive-by shootings and hard-core attitude and their new teacher in a school torn by violence and racial tension.
