Do a lot of black American women suffer from low self esteem?

Actually, a lot of African American women I know are fairly confident. And I mean Just like any other race of women, black women may suffer from low self esteem. I mean it's really an issue for many women of any race, mostly because of beauty, like women try so hard to conform to the standards of beauty set by the media and others and when we feel we fall short our self esteem may get lower. And of course emotional problems and experiences may lower a women's self esteem. And I know you are asking about black women, and I am a black female teenager so maybe I can give you specific reasons why black women in particular may have low self esteem. For one thing, we are living in a Eurocentric society, most models, most women you will see on TV, or anywhere in the media are white. And our society really holds more Eurocentric features to a greater esteem than afrocentric ones, and I mean how is that gonna make a black female feel- read the book The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and you may understand although it was set in a completely different time period. And a black women may be told ( by members of her own race, other races, the media, and herself) that her nappy hair or broad nose isn't as beautiful as a thinner nose and straighter hair. That being said, I don't think black women in general really suffer from this (being told Eurocentric features are better and having self esteem lowered)I mean I really don't and have bee told black is beautiful and to be proud of my ethnicity although the Eurocentric beauty standards I think do effect black people and other races self esteem. I could think of maybe a couple other reasons but don't have the time I hope I have been helpful.
